I was wondering what everyone thinks about when it comes to graphic novels, particurely when doing the fifity/fifty challenge. Even if they are “easier” to read than a regular texted book, do they hold the same weight as their traditional brothers/sisters?

We’ve let them happen in the past, but I guess it’s about if you’re feeling challenged? it’s all a personal goal I suppose? Some people wanna expand the scope of their graphic novel knowledge?

I read a whole bunch of graphic novels as part of my challenge last year, and quality-wise, I don’t think we can pass them off as being less challenging. When it comes to quantity, though, there were times I counted the entire series as one book, and times when I counted each volume (made up of multiple issues) as one. It depends on you, really.

What I’ve done this year, though, is create a whole category just for them, simply because I read so many of them. Maybe, if you feel up to the challenge of adding another 50, you could do that, too?

Either way, I’d love to hear what you’ve been reading. :)

I decided that if I was going to count graphic novels, I’ll only count the really meaty ones (I read Asterios Polyp), or a collection of the regular sized graphic novels (I’m going to get my hands on the first three Hellboy graphic novels). I think that’s fair enough. Although, I want to read all six of Lynd Ward’s wordless novels, and I’m sure many purist would not count them.
